On March 8th, The Canales Project had the honor of performing the musical finale for the Vital Voices Annual Global Leadership Awards at the Eisenhower Theater of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. A special women's empowerment mashup featuring songs by Alicia Keys, Katy Perry, Sara Bareilles, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, and Andra Day, was created for this occasion by our Artist-in-Residence Kurt Crowley. The performers were Elizabeth Stanley, Angela Grovey, and Carla Canales on vocals, and Kurt Crowley at the piano. We were especially excited to meet one of the founders of Vital Voices, Hillary Clinton (pictured above) who gave the closing remarks at the event!
"Millions around the world raised their vital voices on behalf of the rights of women and girls on March 8th, International Women’s Day. Now more than ever, our world needs to join with them, and to invest in the women leaders who are working toward transformational change.
Since 2002, Vital Voices has shined a spotlight on women who innovate, taking the road less traveled. Their voices are resounding and clear. In the face of adversity, they don’t step down, look away or watch from the sidelines. They innovate, they cross lines that divide. They lead. They create the world they imagine and drive transformation in their communities and beyond, improving the world for us all."
