We Are The Children: A Celebration of AAPI Identity Through Music & Intergenerational Storytelling

In observance of AAPI Heritage Month, The Canales Project will host a virtual seminar celebrating concepts of using music to form cultural identity through an exploration of the 1973 album 'A Grain of Sand' by Chris Iijima, Nobuko Miyamoto and Charlie Chin. In collaboration with The Global Leaders Program, this event will be led by 2021 cohort member and TCP team member, Rose Kim. This session will include an overview of the historical context of A Grain of Sand and a conversation with a panel of artists on music and arts’ role in both forming and preserving cultural identity, and the importance of intergenerational storytelling. Guests artists will include an original member of the album Nobuko Miyamoto, filmmaker Tadashi Nakamura, playwright/producer Melisa Tien and Hear Her Song composer Faye Chiao.

Hear Her Song Album Launch Virtual Event

On Friday, March 26th, we will be hosting a virtual album launch for the Hear Her Song debut release! We will be sharing songs, stories and memories of the Hear Her Song, an initiative that has turned 4 years old this year!

We are thrilled to feature some of the earliest Hear Her Song partners Alyse Nelson, CEO of Vital Voice Global Partnership, and Elizabeth Stanley, 2021 Grammy Award WINNER (as of Sunday night- HUGE congratulations Elizabeth!). We are also honored to feature Gwyneth Herbert who will perform and share insight into the artistic process of writing her song, ‘Yours is Ours’, dedicated to the trailblazing feminist icon, Gloria Steinem. Please join us in this uplifting gathering in celebration of this TCP landmark that we have all achieved together!
