October Newsletter
Dear friends,
We hope you have been having a great start to the Fall Season! We are thrilled to share with you updates to our programming that we would love for you to be a part of!
The Future of Cultural Diplomacy
This month marked the launch of the inaugural Future of Cultural Diplomacy Study Group, ‘Soft Power & Cultural Diplomacy’. Co-sponsored by the Harvard Belfer Center’s Future of of Diplomacy Project, this study group is designed for anyone interested in learning more about these two topics in addressing foreign relations. Over the course of three sessions, participants will become familiar with the history of U.S. cultural diplomacy and will better understand how the power of the arts has repeatedly been deployed by the U.S. government to help achieve foreign policy objectives.
UPCOMING SESSIONS
THIS COMING FRIDAY on October 29th, we have our second session, ‘Case Studies of Cultural Diplomacy’ featuring U.S. State Department’s Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Stacy E. White. We will explore a range of topics including jazz ambassadors, dance diplomacy and other non-governmental cultural diplomacy case studies. These study sessions are OPEN AND FREE TO ALL. You can register below!
And please join us for our future sessions on November 12th and December 3rd with guest speakers Joseph S. Nye Jr (Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus and former Dean of the Harvard's Kennedy School of Government) and Dr. Hendrik Ohnesorge (Managing Director, Center for Global Studies and Chair in International Relations, University of Bonn)!
PAST SESSIONS
Fun Fact! We had over 23 countries represented in our study group participants from Session 1! Our first session, ‘Key Definitions, Stakeholders, & Challenges’ took place on October 15th, exploring the difference and similarities between cultural diplomacy and soft power, and how we might define what “American culture” means. We were honored to featured guest speakers John Ferguson (American Voices) and Joanna Shermann (Bond Street Theatre) sharing their wealth of knowledge and experience of diplomatic initiatives through the arts and culture. For those who were unable to make the first session, you may find the recording here.
Please join us in our next study sessions below!
