April Newsletter
Dear Friends,
April was a busy month filled with new projects, partners, events and advocacy initiatives! We are grateful to be involved in this meaningful work as we start to rebuild and vitalize our post-pandemic communities through the arts.
The Future of Cultural Diplomacy
This month marked the inaugural launch of The Future of Cultural Diplomacy, a seminar series co-sponsored by TCP founder Carla Canales and the Future of Diplomacy Project at the Harvard Kennedy School. As a Fellow at Harvard University’s Advanced Leadership Initiative, Carla developed FCD to explore the essential yet often overlooked angle of diplomacy through the arts and culture.
This month included 2 thought-provoking seminars in conversation with Ambassador Nicholas Burns (Goodman Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Relations at Harvard Kennedy School), Nancy Szalwinski, (U.S. State Department Director of Cultural Programs), Ambassador Caroline Kennedy (U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2013-2017) and Dr. Joe Nye (Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor, Emeritus, former Dean of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government).
The next event in the series, titled “Multilateral Cultural Diplomacy: A Conversation with UNESCO’s Director General Audrey Azoulay” will take place on June 2nd. Please join us in this important conversation with unique insight on cultural diplomacy from one of the world’s largest multilateral agencies. In order to attend, you must RSVP here.
New Partnership: The Global Leaders Program
This month also marked the beginning of a new partnership with The Global Leaders Program! The GLP is a 360° Ivy league-curated Executive Education for impact-focused Arts Entrepreneurs. In partnership with the GLP, we will be hosting 2021 cohort member Rose Kim to lead an educational workshop, “We are the Children: A Celebration of AAPI identity through music and intergenerational storytelling” in observance of AAPI Heritage Month. Please join us in this celebratory, musical session!
National Arts Action Summit
This year at the Americans for the Arts National Arts Action Summit, Carla Canales spoke at the mainstage event “Facts & Figures To Make the Case for the Arts” with Vice President of Research, Randy Cohen. The session explored the latest data from throughout the sector to make a strong case with decisionmakers on the arts, creative economy, pandemic repercussions, arts education and more. Recorded content is still in the process of editing, but the session will be available soon! Learn more here.
